In the last post, we tried to differentiate the tone of content that is perfect for product and service pages.  Now, that your onsite (in-website) product and service pages communicate your value proposition, we can take things a little further by blogging.

Many people blog for different reasons. In Internet Marketing, we blog to do content marketing i.e. to market content to a targeted audience.

While the on-site product and service pages are “business- like” and they speak directly to consumers, blogs on the other hand can be targeted to anyone within the eco-system or domain of the subject or topic on-hand including the competition, aspiring students, people wanting troubleshoot advice etc.. So this is what makes blogging more fun because you can take off your marketing-hat and replace it with one that represents your knowledge and expertise on the subject.

If you continue to blog as a “marketer”, chances are that your blogs will start to look less imaginative, restricted, un-“shareable” and carry monotonous tones. But if you can blog as an expert or specialist in your field, with the enthusiasm of a learner;  the vision of the writing can be boundless, and this is what it takes to succeed in Content Marketing.

Here are a few blogging tips to get you started:

Write for the entire “eco-system” particular to your expertise.

Do not restrict yourself to reaching out only to customers when blogging as your goal in blogging is to reach to anyone remotely interested in your field of expertise.

Research.

 Writing.

Writing is the process of communicating your ideas. It is a process that takes time and organization. You can expect around 25% of your blogging process allocated here.

 Re-write.

25% of your blogging process can be allocated to re-writing your blog prior to submission. Re-writing is that part of polishing your content that makes the content palatable. If your content lacks a logical and interesting flow of ideas, has no validation or definite conclusion, then your blog will not have been fully share-friendly. If the content is not “share-worthy”, it will not get shared. Getting shared is the entire point of content marketing.

Titles and Meta-Data.

Writing titles and catchy meta-data can take up to another 15% of your time.

Visual Aid and Posting Process.

Always have a visual aid to reference your content. Remember to keep this prominent in the blog and also to use the visual aid when posting to social media websites. There is more engagement potential when posts are supported by a visual aid.

Share and Comment widgets

Have visible share and comment function widgets so that you and your readers can share the content directly to social media accounts

Internet Marketing 101 – Generating Product & Service Content for your website

Now that you know how to set up your website, social media and your site is linked to from important niche directories, we need to discuss your on-site content i.e. the content within your website. We will work on blog-writing, profile descriptions and social media posts in different sections. For this blog, I want to dedicate our focus in understanding what good content for on-site (within your website) means.

Generally most people write on-site content different than blogs. They are directed towards the target audience. They tend to have a “sales-pitch” kind of a tone.

My recommendation for writing good on-site content for your product/s and service/s is to start with your core value proposition (why you are different than the rest and why your products and services have a slightly higher value than the competition). Although you really want to convince your audience, but the more you try, the worse it gets, so the best practice is to be precise.

By being precise, you are going to keep the content focused, brief and conclusive. The rest now depends on your readers. If you do not have a unique value proposition, it means you are selling something that has “low-value”, this simply means that you may have to re-think your entire line-up of product/service packages, inclusions, price etc..

“This is exactly the problem with Internet Marketing. While it opens a wide opportunity for small and medium sized businesses to grow fast, it rears an ugly second face to it as well i.e. if you are not unique, you will have to fall in line with all the other mediocre businesses with mediocre values”

We did not make the rules, the world generally works that way and there is no way to bend around this one. It only makes perfect sense to do internet marketing when you have a truly unique experience to give to your audience.

Now, that you have something of value to give to your readers, you will need to “generate” your content to be focused on the core essence of the products and services and their unique value propositions.  I say “generate” and not write, because your site content can be richer if you use different formats i.e. text, graphics, videos, slides etc

According to Googles Guidelines, here are 4 ways to create good content.

Basic Business information

Make sure your website has all the needful information needed. Some of the basics are location and contact information.

Unique content

Just because words are written differently, doesn`t mean that you have unique copy. Unique copy means that you have something to offer from a slightly different perspective than the others to your readers

Conversion Content

Make your website credible by having testimonials, citation links, case studies and reviews. This type of content also helps to convert people to buy products and services.

The Human Audience

Do not attempt to write for Search Engines, as that will not look impressive to the human audience. The only thing you need to write for the Search Engines are the meta data i.e. meta description, meta title, meta keywords and so on.  After that, you should only think about people on the other side of the monitor.

Internet Marketing 101 – Setting up your Site, Social Media and Business Listings

In the last post (Internet Marketing 101 – How to Begin and Options), we discussed:

  • Why you should start internet marketing (we looked at some astounding data that reinforced the reasons why to begin internet marketing),
  • How to start by looking at your objectives and how you intend to find quality traffic.
  • Options available on how you can get to your target audience through a website, blog-site, social account or simply by listing your business information in review websites and directories.

Now, let`s see how you can effectively set up your website, social media accounts and business listings.

Setting up your own website

To set up your own website, you will need the following

  • Domain

Get a domain through a domain registrar such as Godaddy or Hostgator. There are plenty more registrars available.  The domain is basically the name/address of your website. Get a domain name that works well for you.

There are many TLDs [top-level domains – .com, .net,  .org and other country coded domains eg. .co.uk (UK), .com.ph & .ph (Philippines), .br (brazil)] that you can choose from, don`t fret if something you like is already taken. You just have to be creative.  Try and keep your domain relevant to your business, it should be as short and memorable as possible.

  • Server

While the domain is an address, servers are like “hard-drives” that keep all the digital information for a website. The domain although appears to us as a “name”, it is infact a numerical address. When this numerical address joins the numerical address of the server, they start to work as one for the needs of the website.  You can also configure the server and domain to start your own unique email with domain system. All you will need is a webmaster to help you with this. Sometimes, your site-developer can do this for free for you. You can get the server of your choice at Godaddy, Hostgator or Rackspace to name a few.

  • Website Layout

Get a web designer or developer to design and code your website. In case you feel that their prices are beyond your budget, consider downloading either free or paid website layout templates that may work for you.  You can get them at squarespace.com, wordpress and even blogger.

Setting up social media accounts

All you really require to set up social media accounts is an email address. You can get free email accounts at Gmail, Yahoomail or Hotmail.

Gmail is preferable in my opinion because later down, you will see that you will need a Gmail or Google account for various other free tools such as Google Places Listing, YouTube, Google Drive and more.

There are many social websites where you can choose to work in. Some of the most popular ones are:

  • Twitter
  • FaceBook
  • YouTube
  • LinkedIn
  • Google Plus or G+

All of these social media sites have an easy registration process. You will be up in social media in no time. After these accounts are made, you can start

  • Connecting with friends, family and people in your contact list. Most of these sites have fabulous features that allows you to massively upload email addresses into them, so that you can start connecting with these contacts in the different social media websites.
  • Making Pages – pages are different that personal profiles. When working in social media, it is more favorable to work in them from both perspectives i.e. personal and company accounts. Use company pages to highlight the very best of your won and other people`s content, while with the personal account, you can be more adventurous, bring out your own unique voice and build actual social media relationships. Getting Listed

Sometimes, you may just want your customers to find you listed in review websites like Google Maps, Google Business and Yelp. Getting listed on other directory websites like Yellowpages can also be useful .

For Google listing products and services, all you will ever need is a gmail address to get listed along with a few requirements such as business name, address and phone.

On the other hand, Google Plus is a great tool for Local SEO with its Google My Business feature.

I suggest that you keep your Facebook page active on a daily basis. Remember to balance your informational and engaging content and your promotional efforts. Yelp and G+ can give your customers the freedom to post reviews of your company so make sure to get positive ones!

Also, marketing through email is 40 times more effective at gaining new customers than doing so on social media sites.

Why is this the case?

Because, comparing them to other marketing mediums, email is more personal and professional. Not to mention they’re more transactional. If you want to build strong and lasting relationships with your customers, go for email.

Here’s what you can do: first and foremost, you have to get your customers email information and as much as possible, personalize your newsletters. If a holiday is coming up, greet them or give discounts and promotions on a monthly basis.

Careful not to overdo this though. Always have a realistic schedule for all your publications.

In the last blog, we looked at the options available in internet marketing. We can see how the different segments of internet marketing can stand alone and can work even more efficiently if you mix your stronger marketing points together. To refresh, the different Internet Marketing segments are:

They can either stand alone or you can have a hybrid strategy involving two, three or all. Now, the question – Do you do internet marketing by yourself, do you hire someone else to do it or do you outsource it to a company that specializes in Internet Marketing.

The firm answer for me here is :

  1. You are a business person.
  2. You got there because you have something to offer.
  3. You know your own business better than anyone else.

DIY internet marketing is the best way to go if and only if, you have the necessary passion and drive for internet marketing.  The other important area to consider is time. You will need time to organize your thoughts, to write content and to syndicate the content strategically. The biggest difference in hiring someone versus outsourcing to a company is that

  • Outsourcing to a company means that you get the benefits of the entire company as a whole. Meaning all of the internet marketing segments are covered well. There is more expertise and there is more aggression in outsourcing to a company.

  • It is best to outsource, if your time to focus on internet marketing is very minimal

  • Even if you hire someone, you will still need to have some focused time to give to internet marketing as the time needed to review applicants will take time. There will also be considerable training needed if you want to hire someone direct.

In short, it is best if you can do Internet Marketing yourself on a personal level. If you can put your personal brand behind your company, there are wonders that can be achieved. However, getting down to reality, only a few can take out time to perform internet marketing duties as it needs considerable amount of persistence and perseverance. If you do not have the time, my recommendation would be to outsource to an Internet Marketing company than to hire someone directly because Internet marketing companies have the resources needed and their marketing personnel are pre-trained to handle different industries at service and retail levels. Ideally, it’s best to do a little of everything while at the same time focusing on one or two more than the others. I know it goes against my first statement when I said that the success of an internet marketing campaign doesn’t rely on the use of all the mentioned segments, then again, the end decision will still depend on you since you’re the one that knows your business inside out.

The reason why I suggested doing a little of all these strategies is due to the multiple opportunities that lie in each of these segments of Internet Marketing, which you will only be able to see as you progress further in your campaign.

A HYBRID STRATEGY FOR EMAIL MARKETING

If you decide on pursuing Email Marketing as your campaign strategy, one important aspect that you have to give high regards to is your contact list. If you focus on this segment alone, pretty soon you will be marketing to the same people over and over again. And this can be very risky for any type of business.

When it comes to Email Marketing, you have to make sure that you constantly add new contacts and leads to your list that you can email to. The best approach you can do to achieve this is to utilize the opportunities that Search Engine Optimization and Search Engine Marketing can provide. A combination of these three segments can be a great way to target potential clients and new email addresses to market to.

SEO/SEM, SOCIAL MEDIA OR EMAIL MARKETING

If you are ranking and getting a lot of visitors to your website, not having contact information of these visitors is a waste of opportunity. You want to keep a thread of communication alive with them so that you can “re-target” them via email or social media.

Your motto in SEO/SEM should be – “Don’t just get visits, convert them.

Conversion is hard to define generally since different industries have their own unique customer purchasing behavior. Business to customer (B2C) purchase decisions are made faster or is even instantaneous as compared to business to business (B2B) purchases where decisions are made after weeks or months of careful evaluation.

The best conversion model to have in your internet marketing is to have leads opt for different things. If the visitor is 100% interested in the product or service you offer, then they may fill up and submit a “Contact Us” form in your website. However, this isn’t always the case.

Although this is what all entrepreneurs aim to achieve, the goal of Internet Marketing is not solely for the purpose of converting leads into sales. Internet marketing needs to be done step by step. Being able to convert a web user into a customer during their first site visit is every marketers dream, but in reality that doesn’t always happen.

The next best thing to get out of the people that visit your page is their contact information.
